Taking and publishing photos and videos at school
Seeing your own child performing in a concert or school play is an unforgettable and proud moment for parents – and something that many will want to capture on a camera. With today's fast access from a mobile phone screen to a social media site, there are certain guidelines school leaders and other personnel should take into account and communicate to parents.
Guidelines
- Make sure your school has a clear photograph and image policy, regardless of whether this is a statutory obligation in your country.
- Ensure that the policy also covers the use of images on social media (by both the school and parents/pupils).
- Communicate the policy along with clear practical guidelines and easy-to-understand examples to the school community.
- Ensure that all parents/legal guardians and/or youth (depending on age and national requirements) have signed a photo and video permission form BEFORE any filming or photographing of pupils.
- If the parent/guardian does not give permission, understand the possible distress this could cause the pupil and discreetly arrange that he/she is otherwise occupied during the filming or photographing process.
- Make sure everyone in the school community understands the implications of sharing photographs and video content on social media – NEVER post the full name, age or any other personal details with a child's photo on your website!
- Remember, school events are happy occasions which should not be restricted by too many regulations.
